If you've lived in Sewickley long enough to have a mental map of autumn, you probably think of it like this: Mavuno lands in mid-September, the Fern Hollow Fall Music Festival follows within the week, and then there's a long quiet stretch until the Wine Walk shows up in November to signal the start of the holiday season. That map was accurate for years. It is not accurate this year.
In 2026, two of Sewickley's three signature fall events moved, and they didn't move by a few days. The result is a calendar that finally has some breathing room between stops, but only if you know where the stops actually are. Show up on the old dates and you'll find an empty street where a festival used to be.
The Old Rhythm, Broken Down
For the last several years, Mavuno and the Fall Music Festival landed close together. In 2023, Mavuno ran September 15-16 at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, with the Fall Music Festival following on September 9. In 2024, Mavuno moved to Riverfront Park for a single day, September 21, while Fern Hollow's festival landed September 28, a week later. By 2025, Fern Hollow had shifted to September 6, its 25th anniversary year. That clustering meant if you caught one event, you were likely to catch the other. It also meant if you missed that window entirely, whether from travel or just a busy month, you lost both.
What Actually Changed This Year
According to the Sewickley Borough Council's February 10, 2026 meeting agenda, the borough approved a street closure request from Sweetwater Center for the Arts to hold Mavuno on Saturday, September 26, closing Walnut Street from Duquesne Way to Thorn Street from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. That's five to eleven days later than the festival's recent September dates, and it lands the event in its 30th anniversary year, a milestone Sweetwater has been marking as it celebrates three decades of showcasing Black and BIPOC artists in the Sewickley Valley.
Fern Hollow's Fall Music Festival moved even further. The Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce's 2026 community calendar lists the event for Saturday, October 17, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the nature center's grounds on Glen Mitchell Road in Sewickley Heights. That's not a shift of a week. It's a shift of roughly three weeks past where the festival has landed every year since at least 2023, and it moves the event out of September altogether and into the heart of Sewickley's October.
The Wine Walk, meanwhile, held its usual place. The same February borough agenda confirms the 16th Annual Sewickley Wine Walk for Wednesday, November 4, with a partial closure of Locust Street near Beaver Street from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit Pittsburgh's event listing notes that tickets for this year's walk go on sale September 8, and the event has a track record of selling out, drawing more than 900 attendees in recent years to sample wine at stops throughout the village's business district.
Line those three dates up and the new shape of Sewickley's fall becomes clear: Mavuno on September 26, Fern Hollow on October 17, and the Wine Walk on November 4. Instead of two events crowded into one September week followed by a long silence, the village now has three evenly spaced weekends running from late September through early November.
Why This Actually Matters If You Live Here
The old clustering rewarded people who paid attention for one specific week in September and then could coast for a month and a half. The new spacing rewards people who check the calendar three separate times. The Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce launched the extended shopping hours program this year, running from May through October, with local shops staying open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Chamber officials told TribLive that the program was designed as a lead in to the Wine Walk and the holiday season, giving residents and visitors more reason to linger downtown on weeknights as the fall festivals thin out. With Thursday Night Live running through the end of October, it effectively bridges the three-week stretch between Mavuno and Fern Hollow, and the shorter run into the Wine Walk in November.
The 30th Mavuno and What's Actually There
Mavuno isn't just moving dates, it's marking a real anniversary. Founded in 1996 by Black artists and educators in the Sewickley and Ohio Valley region, the festival takes its name from the Swahili word for harvest, a nod to its traditional late-September timing even as the exact weekend has shifted year to year. Sweetwater Center for the Arts has described this year's programming as built around themes of resilience and cultural identity, continuing a format that has grown to include a beer garden in recent years, an addition credited to Barrel & Flow founder Day Bracey, who has served on the festival's committee. The event brings in local art vendors, live music, and food alongside a gallery exhibition at Sweetwater's space on Broad Street.
Fern Hollow's Move Into October
Fern Hollow Nature Center's Fall Music Festival has always been a fundraiser as much as a party, supporting the nonprofit's environmental education programming across the Sewickley Valley's parks and creek systems. Past years have brought bands like the Sweetwater Cottage Band and Dad Band, food trucks, and yard games spread across the meadow at the nature center's Glen Mitchell Road location, with First National Bank as a recurring presenter. The Wine Walk Still Does What It's Always Done
Unlike the other two, the Wine Walk hasn't drifted. It remains the village's clearest signal that fall is ending and the holidays are starting, a role the Chamber has leaned into for sixteen years running. With tickets going on sale September 8 and past years consistently selling out, waiting until late October to buy in is a good way to end up checking the door line instead of strolling Locust Street with a glass in hand.
